Meet the Preacher: Michelle McCarty 

2013 – Present

Rev. Michelle McCarty is an ordained elder serving Hunter UMC and Jefferson UMC.  She is a graduate of Perkins School of Theology SMU, where she interned with the Interfaith Council of Dallas (consisting of over 40 diverse faith leaders).  Her work with the council involved promoting mutual understanding and respect among diverse faith traditions; developing and facilitating interfaith dialogue (including dialogue for an International Interfaith Conference in Macedonia); developing programs for international diplomats and faith leaders regarding interfaith relations and first amendment rights in the US; and teaching world religions.  Her international peace and reconciliation studies included, “9/11 & the Northern Ireland Conflict” at Queens College, Belfast Ireland; “Hospitality & Reconciliation” in Taize France; “An Immersion in the Palestinian Perspective” in Israel (including participation in Palestinian and Israeli Peace Talks with former President Jimmy Carter); and, “A Wesleyan Study of Spiritual Renewal” at Cambridge, England.  Her ministry of reconciliation extends to work with the Oklahoma Department of Correction in Prison Ministry; Peace Ambassador Training; Lombard Mennonite Peace Center’s Mediation Training; and, the Oklahoma UMC Conference’s Peace with Justice Taskforce and Mediation Planning Team. Rev. McCarty is a Spiritual Director and retreat leader, and a Disaster Spiritual Care Team Leader with the Oklahoma Conference of Churches.
